3 Factors That Contribute To Your Auto Insurance

Insurance Blog

Auto insurance is something that everyone needs to think about. If you don't have personal auto insurance, you could get in big trouble with the state. In fact, you are required to carry insurance in all states, which is why you should start thinking about your insurance as soon as you purchase a car. The price that you pay in auto insurance will be largely dependent on a couple different factors. Here are some of the important factors.

1. Your Driving Record

Your driving record will be one of the most important factors in determining how much you pay. The safer a driver you are, the less you will pay. If you have gotten speeding tickets, have had an accident, or have been convicted of a DUI, then you should expect to see a spike in your insurance. Usually these stay on your record for about 5 year, after which, they are not considered.

If you do get a ticket or a warning from a traffic cop, you should consider doing traffic school. In some instances, you can go to a special school where you get a refresher course on how to drive. This will remove the citation from your record so that it doesn't count toward your insurance.

2. The Car That You Drive

Another important factor in how much you pay in insurance is what kind of car you drive. The more expensive the car, the more it will be to insure. The insurer will take into account your car's year, make, and model, and may also have it appraised. If it will cost more to repair or replace, you will pay for that in your auto insurance.

Additionally, if parts are really expensive, say you have a fancy, foreign-made car, you probably will have to spend more on insurance.

3. The State In Which You Live

Lastly, the place where you live will play a role in how much you pay for auto insurance. The insurance company will determine how dangerous the city and state is where you live. If you live in an area that has a lot of accidents, drunk driving, and notoriously bad drivers, you will pay more. Cities that are less populated and don't have a lot of freeway driving or commuting are going to be cheaper to live in when it comes to auto insurance.

These are probably the 3 biggest factors in determining how much you will pay for auto insurance.

Insurance Tips for People of All Ages

I still remember the first time I had to chose an insurance policy; I was 17 years old and had just saved up enough money to afford my very first car. I was so excited to begin driving, but overwhelmed with all of the different auto insurance options. My father helped me chose a full-coverage policy that would cover the cost of my car if it were to become damaged in an accident. When I inevitably caused a small fender-bender as a new driver, my insurance company paid for my car repairs, so it sure was the best policy for me! Now that I am older and have learned a lot about home insurance and other types of insurance, I thought I would make a blog to help others who need insurance advice, like what my dad gave me. I hope I can help you make wise insurance decisions!
